North West police have urged motorists to exercise caution after two men dressed as traffic officers hijacked a motorist near Potchefstroom earlier this month.
On Thursday, 6 October, the 24-year-old motorist was driving an Isuzu bakkie on the R501, between Potchefstroom and Carletonville, at about 07:45, when the bogus traffic officers stopped him.
"The men, who were driving a white Volkswagen Polo with blue lights, requested him (the motorist) to produce his driver's licence and to step out of the vehicle for a routine inspection," North West police spokesperson, Colonel Adele Myburgh said.
Suddenly, a firearm was pointed at him and he was pushed into the back of the vehicle.

A second Volkswagen Polo pulled up.
The motorist was blindfolded and taken to Vleikop in Randfontein, where he was eventually released.
He was not physically harmed.

Myburgh warned: "Motorists are therefore urged to be vigilant at all times, especially when stopped by traffic or police officers who look suspicious. Be aware of your surroundings and approach intersections slowly."
"If you suspect that you are being followed, adjust your route and start making your way to the nearest police station. It is always best to practise safety first."
