A Cape Town man died during a suspected drowning incident in Gordon's Bay on Sunday afternoon.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was called when eyewitnesses reported a drowning in progress at a beach next to the Gordon's Bay Naval Base.
NSRI Gordons Bay duty coxswain Kyle Burns said: "City of Cape Town lifeguards, on duty at the Gordon's Bay main beach, reportedly also arrived on the scene from their neighbouring duty beach and they confirmed that an adult male was out of the water. He had been rescued by a group of swimmers who reportedly noticed the man not moving in the water."
The lifeguards initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts and raised the alarm, calling for emergency services to attend to the scene.
"Despite extensive efforts by paramedics to resuscitate the 25-year-old man from Athlone, sadly he was declared dead. Families who had been nearby at the time were taken into the care of police," said Burns.

Authorities could not confirm the cause of death as drowning at the time of publication.
In an unrelated incident, a toddler and his father were rescued after being swept into the Kalk Bay harbour on Saturday.
NSRI Simon's Town operations controller Darren Zimmerman said an NSRI crew was called after a large wave swept a boy in a stroller and his father into the sea.

Two locals jumped into the water to assist.
"The toddler, who had earlier just been unstrapped in the stroller, was kept afloat by his dad while Good Samaritans reached them. The toddler was rescued [first] from the water by the Good Samaritans, who then assisted the dad," said Zimmerman.
"The stroller and some other belongings were recovered from the water by a third Good Samaritan."
Paramedics who attended to the scene treated both the toddler and his father, and they were transported to hospital in a stable condition.
The family is from Muizenberg and regularly visits Kalk Bay, said Zimmerman.
