  • A man was hospitalised after a gang abducted him and cut off his hands.
  • The unknown suspects fled the scene with the man's body parts.
  • Police have opened a case of attempted murder.

A 30-year-old man is in hospital after a gang of men abducted him at gunpoint and chopped off both his hands in Vosman, near Emalahleni, Mpumalanga.

According to police, the man was walking on the Kromdraai Road towards Extension 16 in Vosman on Wednesday, when six men in a green Opel Corsa bakkie accosted him.

According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the suspects pointed a gun at the man, grabbed him, and forced him into the bakkie, where they tied up his hands and legs.

"The suspects somehow communicated the message to him that they were going to kill him and, according to the victim, that was the only thing he could hear from them," said Mdhluli.

They then drove with him into the bushes and chopped off his hands.

Mdhluli added:

If that was not enough, they took both his hands and fled [with them].

The man was later found by security officers, who alerted the police and called for medical assistance.

He is currently recovering in hospital. Police have opened a case of attempted murder and are in pursuit of the suspects.

Mpumalanga provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has vowed to ensure the perpetrators are arrested.

"Though the victim was not killed, the acts committed by the suspects are heartless and should be strongly condemned in the strongest possible way," said Manamela.
