More than 300 pupils, whose 2022 matric results were withheld amid a cheating scandal, accused the Department of Basic Education of conducting the disciplinary process like a kangaroo court and they want the High Court to force the department to release their results.
In December 2022, the department launched an investigation into cheating allegations in the 2022 national senior certificate exams, which involved 1 189 pupils from six provinces.
Of this number, 1 127 pupils were believed to be from schools in Mpumalanga, where pupils allegedly paid teachers up to R1 500 to join a WhatsApp group, named Road to Varsity.
