Two white Bengal tigers set free from captivity at a private home in Boksburg have experienced the wild for the first time in two years.

The NSPCA (National Council of SPCAs) said its Wildlife Protection Unit, the Boksburg SPCA Inspectorate, and wildlife veterinarian Dr Peter Caldwell sedated the tigers earlier this week and transported them to a credited wildlife facility.

The animal organisation said the conditions under which the big cats were being kept were unconducive to their well-being.

"Wildlife Protection Unit, in collaboration with the Boksburg SPCA Inspectorate and renowned big cat veterinarian Dr Caldwell, attended to the Boksburg property to safely sedate and transport the tigers," said the NSPCA.

"The NSPCA staunchly opposes the keeping and breeding of indigenous and exotic wild species in captivity for purposes other than genuine conservation efforts or rehabilitation and sanctuary purposes in facilities approved by the National Council of SPCAs," it said.
