OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg is a major trafficking hub for all sorts of illicit commodities, particularly wildlife products, a recent Global Initiative report found.
The report - Convergence of wildlife crime and other forms of transnational organised crime in Eastern and Southern Africa convergence of wildlife crime - draws its conclusions from research conducted between January 2021 and August 2022.
The author, Alastair Nelson, a senior analyst at Global Initiative, said hundreds of interviews were conducted with government officials, staff from multilateral or bilateral organisations, NGO workers and people in the private sector, all of whom work in roles related to combating or reducing wildlife crime or other types of organised crime, in 10 countries across Eastern and Southern Africa.
