The CEO of the Road Traffic Infringement Agency (RTIA) has been placed under precautionary suspension.
Japh Chuwe is listed as chief executive on the agency's website. The CEO's name was not mentioned in the body's statement on Friday morning.
The RTIA board took the decision, effective from Friday, due to findings of serious maladministration by the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) and whistleblower reports.
"Having appraised itself with the AGSA findings and whistleblower reports, a forensic investigations firm has been appointed to conduct a forensic investigation into the findings of the AGSA and whistleblower reports," RTIA spokesperson Monde Mkalipi said in the statement.
To "preserve the integrity of the investigation and to maintain stakeholder confidence", the board placed the CEO – who also fills the role of registrar – and other implicated senior employees under precautionary suspension with full pay.
"Once the forensic report is rendered, the board will consider the recommendations, take legal advice thereon and then take the appropriate decision on whether there exists any merit for RTIA to proceed with disciplinary action against the registrar/chief executive officer and such other implicated senior employees," Mkalipi said.
Advocate Mncedisi Bilikwana, the RTIA's executive head of legal and governance, has been appointed as acting registrar and CEO in the interim.
