Vigilantism appears to be on the rise in South Africa. But what is fuelling mob justice attacks? Experts say a deeply rooted fear among communities that feel failed by the criminal justice system is at the heart of the attacks.

E-hailing driver Abongile Mafalala, 30, died in a gruesome vigilante attack in Cape Town earlier this month. An angry mob accused him of kidnapping children in the area - a claim law enforcement officials have since denied.

The incident is one of many similar ones in South Africa.
