Two pedestrians have been killed after being hit by a truck while walking in the emergency lane of the R102 north of Durban.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said paramedics responded to the incident on the R102 between Ottawa and Verulam on Tuesday morning.

"Reports indicate that two pedestrians walking in the emergency lane were struck down by a truck. On arrival Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) had started CPR on an adult male pedestrian who had gone into cardiac arrest," said Herbst.

RUSA spokesperson Prem Balram said once the patient was stabilised, he was transported to a local hospital.

Balram said:

The male sustained critical injuries from the high-impact collision. His clothing items were located several metres away from the scene.

However, he succumbed to his injures later in hospital.

A second pedestrian, a woman, appeared to have been dragged by the truck for about 15m, Balram said.

"An adult female pedestrian was assessed and found to have sustained fatal injuries and was sadly declared deceased on the scene," Herbst added.
