  • A gang of men robbed a cash van on a highway in Cape Town on Tuesday.
  • Specialised police officers responded to the heist and arrested four men.
  • Two of the robbers were injured during a shootout, while two guards sustained bullet wounds.

Four people were injured following a cash-in-transit heist on the N1 inbound at the N7 offramp in Goodwood, Cape Town, on Tuesday.

ER24 paramedics said when they arrived on the scene at 18:30, along with Cape Metro EMS and several other services, several vehicles were parked on the offramp.

"Local authorities were already on the scene, assessing the situation and diverting the traffic," ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

Meiring added that medics assessed the injured. They found that one suspect had sustained a gunshot wound to his buttocks while another had sustained a gunshot wound to his right thigh, leaving him in a serious condition, Meiring said.

A security guard was also assessed and found to have suffered a minor abrasion to his head.

Meiring added:

Medics treated the patients and transported two to nearby hospitals for further care.

The Cape Metro EMS transported the seriously injured man to a nearby hospital.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda said four people were arrested, while a number of others fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.

"It [was] reported that a Jeep which was driving along the N7 stopped abruptly in the middle of the road, causing a light delivery vehicle to collide with the cash van. The suspects are alleged to have used explosives to blow the safe open. One vehicle is reported to have caught fire during the robbery," Netshiunda said in a statement on Wednesday morning.

He said members of the police's National Intervention Unit responded to the incident, and a shootout ensued between the police officers and the robbers.

During the stand-off police shot one of the gunmen, while another injured himself during the blast.

"Both the security guard and the driver of the cash van also sustained gunshot [wounds] during the ordeal and were taken to hospital for treatment."

Netshiunda said the four men arrested will appear in court soon on charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, and the illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and an explosive device.

A manhunt has been launched for the robbers who fled.
