  • Three people were arrested after they were found in possession of a suspected stolen car.
  • It's believed that the car belonged to a traffic officer who was murdered and hijacked.
  • Two people were injured during the hijacking.

A 72-year-old woman and her two sons were arrested after they were found in possession of a car that allegedly belonged to a murdered traffic officer.

The officer, 35-year-old Thabo Mashego, was hijacked and murdered in Saselani, near Bushbuckridge on Friday night, police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said.

Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, said the traffic officer was with two friends at the time.

Mmusi said:

According to reports, Mashego was driving in his VW Polo hatchback when two suspects suddenly emerged along the road, wielding a firearm. The suspects then signalled Mashego to stop. He apparently refused to stop. This seemingly prompted the assailants to fire shots at the vehicle subsequently injuring its occupants.

Mashego and the passengers were taken to Mapulane Hospital where Mashego was certified dead on arrival.

Local police received a tip-off about a car parked behind a house in Agincourt. It was covered with a white cloth. When police arrived, they found a VW Polo and arrested the woman.

They also found the VW Polo's battery inside the woman's son's bedroom.

"The old woman and two of her sons were arrested for possession of suspected stolen vehicle. Police cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges against the suspect and further link them to a hijacking and murder case," Mohlala said.

The woman and her sons are expected to appear in the Mkhuhlu Magistrate's Court soon.
