Huawai marketing manager, Shao Yang, told the BBC the phone is only 6.18mm thick and has the largest screen for its form size.
The Ascend P6 is "significant" because it marks a
global launch held outside Huawei's home base of China and will be a
stand-alone event, unlike previous launches at industry trade shows reports AFP.
"It's a very well-designed, very appealing phone – one of the thinnest phones
in the world," Huawei spokesperson Roland Sladek said.
"It's certainly competing with Apple but beyond that it's really looking
for an audience who look for a piece of modern fashion," he said.
The front facing camera is a very high quality 5 megapixel device which is class leading at the moment.
When Yang was asked how he saw the future of this phone, but also the brand, he answered by saying that 7 years ago nobody had heard of the Apple iPhone, let alone seen one. The same can be said about Samsung, but in their case as little as 5 years ago.
Basic specifications include:
Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2.
A rather low 8 megapixel rear camera.
8GB internal memory, but supports 32GB microSD card.
An in-house developed 1,5GHz quad core processor.
Starting out as a provider of telecom network equipment, Huawei has made inroads into mobile devices by selling smartphones under its own brand over the past three years.
The US Congress last year warned network equipment supplied by Huawei could be used for spying and called for its exclusion from government contracts and acquisitions.
Huawei has denied those claims and accused the US government of protectionism.
In China's highly competitive smartphone segment, Huawei held a 10.1% share in the first quarter of this year, higher than Apple's 6.4%, according to consultancy Analysys International.
South Korea's Samsung was the market leader for smartphones in China with 17.3% for the period, its data showed.
"The launch of this higher quality handset is related to Huawei's own strategy of product excellence," Wang Jun of Analysys International said.
A launch date for South Africa has not yet been announced.
