We take you inside the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town, where rescued northern rockhopper penguins have been given a second chance at life.
Jennifer Sanasie speaks to Sonia Peck about the conditions in which the penguins are found on Southern Cape beaches. Peck tells us that it is believed the penguins get caught by accident in fishing nets, and instead of throwing the birds back into the sea, fishermen keep the penguins on board as pets. We even learn about a situation where one of the penguins feet were tied together so that he couldn't hop back into the ocean.
When the fishermen come into the harbour, they throw the birds overboard to avoid hefty fines associated with having the endangered species on their boat. By this time the penguins are malnourished and weak and are usually unable to swim.
These penguins have been given a second chance, and now live out their days happy as ever at the Cape Town Aquarium. Find out how the majestic birds live in the video above.
