At least five people were injured during a protest at Roodepoort Primary School, on the West Rand.
Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said on Friday the school would be temporarily closed after teaching has been disrupted for months following allegations of maladministration and unhappiness about the principal's appointment.
Department spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said a minority of the parents did not want the school to be closed.
A task team had been set up to mediate between parents and the department. Once this had been dealt with, the school would be reopened.
