On Sunday a fire damaged parts of Stellenbosch University's Van der Sterr building, which houses its accounting and statistics departments. According to the Chief Fire Officer of Stellenbosch Local Municipality, Wayne Smith, the causes of the fire are still unknown. University officials confirmed in a statement that there were no university staff or students inside the building during the fire.
Stellenbosch University officials said "the roof and third floor on the northern and eastern sections of the building suffered the most damage" and that "the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are still unknown."
In 2010, a similar incident occurred when the RW Wilcocks building, which housed the history department, was damaged by a fire.
