Or maybe you remember that one time a lion adopted a little gazelle!
Well, believe it or not, an almost identical situation played itself out in northern Botswana recently, but this time saw a lioness’ mother instincts kick in when she discovered the young of her unfortunate prey still clinging to its mother’s fur.
National Geographic reports that photographer, Evan Schiller managed to capture the incredible moment when a mother baboon broke away from her nervous troop and got intercepted by an opportunistic lioness.
Schiller described how as the large baboon died in the lioness’ jaws, a tiny baby started disengaging itself from the mother.
Even though it tried to escape the predator, it was too tired and weak. But here’s the amazing part – instead of snapping it up or leaving it for dead, the lioness turned her attention to the little guy and started playing with it.
She even gently picked it up in her jaws, as she would one of her cubs and placed it gently between her front paws as she lay down.
Lulled into a sense of security, the baby baboon embraced the situation and even tried to suckle from the lioness’ chest.
The peaceful moment was broken by a few impatient male lions close by.
In this moment of distraction another incredible thing happened: a large male baboon swooped down and rescued the young member of his troop.
