Kano -The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has warned companies in Kano State against flouting environmental laws and standards.
Mr Akin Awobamise, the Director, North-West Zonal Office of the agency, issued the warning when he paid an inspection visit to Vitro Pharmaceutical Company in Rijiyar Zaki, near Kano.
Awobamises stressed that chemicals commonly used for industrial, domestic and agricultural purposes could negatively impact on human health and the environment, if uncontrolled.
Awobamise maintained that the agency would not hesitate to shut down the company, if it continued with its uncontrolled discharge of waste.
The director also advised the company to recycle its waste or use standard ways of burning it.
He added that his office would prepare a comprehensive report on the visit and forward it to NESREA headquarters for necessary action.
Responding, Mr Abdulrasheed Usman, the Quality Control Manager of the company, gave assurance that the company would cooperate with the agency to ensure a healthy environment.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the NESREA team also visited farmlands and grave yards near the company, to ascertain the level of pollution in the area.
