This guy fascinates me so much. I was not a fan of his at Athens where he won 6 gold medals, at Beijing where he won 8gold medals and suddenly I am at London where he is currently having a tough time as I write this article (11:37 pm).
Well, the bottom line is that he has won me over not because he won a gold medal in the 4x200m Freestyle relay or because he was close to clinching a gold medal in the 200m butterfly stroke even though 20 year old Chad Le Clos beat him to the wall but because after realizing that Le Champ (Chad Le Clos) had beaten him to the throne thereby killing his dream of a third consecutive win in that particular event, he didn't relent.
He said something to his team mates before they swarm to glory in the 4x200 relay. He said "I wanted a big lead," Phelps said. "I told the guys: 'Get me a big lead.' And they gave it to me."
That really touched me. 19 medals so far in all competitions is greatness.
