Death, a dreaded word that brings no one any joy seems to be on the lips of everyone around the world.
This year has recorded in its first quarter more deaths and killings all around the world than some years combined. Nigeria has had its own share of the unfortunate phenomenon.
It is a known fact that people die on a daily basis from illnesses, child-birth and auto accidents, but terrorism has claimed more people in a matter of days than these three plagues have in years. Talk also of the recent plane crash that caused nations to weep for Nigeria and most importantly, still brings tears to the eyes of people.
Mothers still mourn their children who were victims of a certain individuals’ grudge (Bombers). People still cringe at the mention of loved ones who death snatched viciously without a backward glance.
Every day, it is one story after another of killings that it begins to seem like the lives of humans are of little importance.
Sometimes, the way people are killed leaves one wondering if there is something in the air that influences individuals to act in deadly manners. Men suddenly wake up, pull weapons and begin slaughtering their fellow human beings.
There has been over 50 cases of mass killing around the world in countries like Afghanistan, Baghdad, Damascus, Iraq, Nigeria, Thailand to mention a few.
The recent bout of killings happened in Colorado when a man systematically walked into a movie theatre at midnight and opened fire on hundreds of unsuspecting persons who were engrossed in "The Dark Knight Rises".
The act of the gunman left 14 people dead and at least 50 injured as reported by the foreign media. 6-year-old Veronica was the youngest victim. This is just one in many cases of careless shootings claiming dozens of innocent lives.
The increase in the perpetration of these manic acts begs the question: Are human lives that unimportant?
Nigeria is now a country where people live a pessimistic life. No one believes it when they hear that electricity will soon become constant. People sneer when they hear that corrupt politicians will be brought to book. Heads shake in negativity when the President announces that he will end the reign of terrorists in the country.
The majority of Nigerians are negative towards the belief of a much better Nigeria, because they were born into the 'crisis' in the nation and are yet to see even an iota of change.
Terrorism, an act that leaves death in its wake has forced many to seek better living outside the country, some at the detriment of a decent life they could have had in their home country.
