2012-08-02 17:36
Niger - Sixty-eight people have died from the 3,100 cholera cases reported in Niger, representing 2.19 per cent, according to the latest newsletter issued by the UN Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA-Niger).

Of the 3,100 cases, 3,082 were reported in the Tillabery region (west), where 63 people died.

However, the number of cases continues to decline on a weekly basis, with 78 cases including two deaths reported from July 22 to  July 29, against 108 cases and three deaths the previous week.

OCHA said 11 new cases, none of them fatal, have been reported in the past three weeks in the camp sheltering Malian refugees in Tabarabarey, on the border between Niger and Mali.

According to OCHA-Niger, the resurgence of cholera cases are feared in the health districts of Madoua and Tchintabaraden (north and south), where water facilities were destroyed by heavy rains.
