Primary education standard improved in Plateau

Jos - Mrs Lyop Mang, the executive chairwoman of State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), says the standard of primary education in Plateau has improved.

Mang told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday that the improvement in primary education was due to an increase in the numbers of qualitative teachers in the service of the state.

She commended her predecessor, "who took the training and retraining of teachers very seriously", for the achievement.

The Chairman also lauded Gov. Jonah Jang for the achievement, saying the governor did a lot to transform the education sector.

She said in a bid to enhance skill and capability of its teachers, SUBEB had initiated a new scheme called Train the Trainer.

"Presently, we have a teacher that left for Japan for such training. By the time she returns, she will be the one to train some a number of teachers, who will in turn train others," she said.

She said that the ratio of girls to boys had improved, adding: "Our girls in primary schools are now competing with the boys in virtually all areas, particularly in enrolment and knowledge where the ratio is 1:1."
