Lagos - Tayo Oreweme, the Lagos Liaison Officer, National Sports Commission (NSC), on Thursday raised an alarm that the stadium was under constant siege of vandals.
Oreweme disclosed this while commenting on the underground electric cables that were recently vandalised at the stadium.
“Although, the electricity supply to the stadium has been disconnected, electric cables at the stadium are constantly being vandalised,” she said.
Oreweme who expressed the feeling that the disconnection may be the reason for the cables being damaged, however, lamented on the low level of security available at the stadium.
“The current level of security personnel available at the stadium are not enough to cater for the proper round the clock check on facilities at the stadium.
“Security personnel of just 15 individuals are too weak to check many negative vices that do occur daily at the complex.
“In the past we had three sets of 25 securities operatives assigned to the complex by the federal ministry of sports, but recently, it was overturned.
“We are not only left by the ministry to handle the security ourselves, we are also saddled with the general sanitation and other managerial running of the complex,” Oreweme said.
According to her, miscreants defecate in wrong places at the complex while some play football in wrong places leading to the damage of certain facilities at the stadium.
The officer noted that the stadium policy of opening from 6 a.m till 10 p.m had become cumbersome for the 15 security personnel to do their work effectively.
“In contrast to what entails at the Teslim Balogun Stadium adjacent to us, the complex is always locked, unless there is an event.
“But here at the National Stadium, it is always opened to people within the stipulated hours,” she said.
Oreweme said that the situation did not afford the stadium management to control the crowd that troop in to engage themselves in many sporting activities.
She said that there was then the need to expand the level of security at the complex.
