Reading is such an important skill to have but also it’s also fun. But with the bombardment of TV, movies, computers and video games it’s easy to see how children would rather take the easy route instead of letting their imaginations work a little.
Here’s how to build your child’s library from a young age and instil a love for reading.
But he’s just a baby
Even a one year old can appreciate books. Start off with pop up classic
Spot the Dog or even
Peter Rabbit. And don’t forget everyone’s favourite bear,
Winnie the Pooh.
As they get older you can get less chewable versions of the above and introduce good old
Paddington Bear. Enid Blyton will whisk them away on
The Magic Faraway Tree with Silky, Moonface and the Saucepan Man.
For the girls
As a young girl I read and re-read
Heidi numerous times and still have my copy.
Little Women and
Little Men by Louisa M. Alcott is another classic that girls might like as well as the fantasy adventure
Alice in Wonderland.
For the boys
Older boys will love the
Secret Seven and
Famous Five, also by Miss Blyton. Getting into adventures and saving the day will appeal to the boys. The
Hardy Boys detective skills will also be sure to hold their attention.
And let’s not forget Roald Dahl’s
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will have their imaginations running wild with his over the top candy factory and the misadventures of greedy kids. Who wouldn’t want that river of chocolate!
