A child’s brain doesn’t differentiate between real and dramatised violence.
Brain scans performed on children watching dramatised
violence indicated that they were responding in a very similar way to kids who had witnessed
real violence,
according to Health24.
Ticking bombs? The test results showed that the MRI scans displayed common results for
violence depicted across various media, including
TV, video games, music and movies- a scientist involved with the project stated that:
“Children who played
violent video games had a heightened likelihood of aggression for up to 15 minutes after switching off the console.
Over the long term it's just like eating fatty food - one hamburger won't kill you but there is a cumulative effect."
The results vindicate a UK government implementation of age-restrictions on violent or sexual video games.
Children are frequently exposed to media almost all day, prompting concerns that these kids may be negatively influenced by what they are allowed access to.
