The medal collection may not show it, but South Africa is going through a sprint growth spurt it has never experienced since returning to the Olympics in 1992.

There was the awesome foursome of Morne Nagel, Corne du Plessis, Lee-Roy Newton and Mathew Quinn, who collected a 4 x 100m relay gold medal at the 2001 Athletics World Championships - but, at best, SA remained proper flyweights in the heavyweight sprinting world.
