  • WP's upcoming home Currie Cup games against the Pumas and Lions have been moved to Athlone Stadium.
  • This was done in order to preserve Cape Town Stadium's suspect playing surface.
  • The Stormers will host Munster in the URC final at the stadium in Green Point on 27 May.

Western Province's upcoming home Currie Cup clashes against the Pumas and Lions will be played at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.

WP tackle the Pumas this Friday (19 May - 17:00) and Lions the next Friday (26 May - 17:05).

This will give the suspect Cape Town Stadium playing surface a welcome "breather" ahead of the Stormers v Munster URC final next Saturday (27 May).

The stadium's pitch has been problematic for some time and there were fears it would tear up during last weekend's semi-final between the Stormers and Connacht.

The Stormers didn't expect to host the URC final, but with Munster shocking Leinster 16-15 in their semi-final, the Capetonians are set for one final hurrah on the Cape Town Stadium pitch.

A new hybrid pitch, which will be 50% synthetic and 50% grass, will be laid in July.

"A decision was taken to move both games in order to prioritise pitch maintenance ahead of the United Rugby Championship Grand Final between the Stormers and Munster on Saturday 27 May," a WP Rugby statement read.

The Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch was also a possibility, but the union's top brass opted to take the game to Athlone Stadium.

All tickets for both games will be R50 each (unreserved seating). Tickets are available exclusively from Ticketpro and will go on sale on Tuesday at 17:00, with WP Rugby adding that season tickets would be valid for the games.

WP are fourth on the Currie Cup standings on 27 points.
