CPUT beat WSU All Blacks in extra-time thriller to win Varsity Shield title

Winger Nathan Nkutu scored a late extra-time try as Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) retained their Varsity Shield title by beating Walter Sisulu University (WSU) 30-26 in the final at Tuks Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday.

The Varsity Cup's official website reports that the WSU All Blacks had fought back from 23-6 down midway through the second half to draw level after 66 minutes.

WSU captain Litha Nkula then missed two late penalty goal attempts to snatch victory, before the match went to extra-time.

Nkula was on target with a penalty in the first half of extra time but Nkutu who snatched victory for the Cape students with a 99th-minute try.

Nkutu also scooped the Player that Rocks accolade.
