South Africa face Morocco in the Afcon last 16 at the Laurent Pokou Stadium in San Pedro, Ivory Coast, on Tuesday (22:00, SA time), and it is a fixture that could potentially define coach Hugo Broos' tenure with Bafana Bafana as he marks 1 000 days in charge.

Prior to his appointment on 5 May, 2021, Broos' name was being mentioned alongside Carlos Queiroz and Benni McCarthy as the South African Football Association (SAFA) looked for their next Bafana boss after sacking Molefi Ntseki.

On a Zoom call unveiling on that day, the Belgian was visibly excited about his new five-year gig. Two years and nine months later, the 71-year-old may feel a bit differently about the job.
