South Africa's wheelchair tennis star Kgothatso Montjane stayed on course for her maiden singles Grand Slam title when she advanced to the semifinals of the Australian Open on Wednesday.

The 11th-ranked Montjane overcame Japan's Manami Tanaki 6-2, 6-0 to equal her last four result from 2023, having beaten Tanaki's compatriot Momoko Ohtani 6-2, 2-0 (retired) in the previous round. Montjane's victory means she now has a date with doubles partner and singles second seed Yui Kamiji - also Japanese - on Thursday, the bizarre thing being the two are also scheduled to play together against Angelica Bernal and Zhenzhen Zhu as the doubles top seeds.

As familiar as the opponent is for Montjane, this is a clash that has troubled her in the past, with the South African winning just four of their 38 matches - the last of those being eight years ago - and Kamiji winning the rest. While their head-to-head history may be lopsided, the two are coming off a great 2023 together, having won the French and US Open titles, the last by walkover.
