DA mourns the loss of Clive Rice

Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has sent its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of one of South Africa’s cricket legends, Clive Rice.

Rice passed away on Tuesday morning after a lengthy battle with a brain tumour.

Rice will be remembered as the first South African One Day International (ODI) skipper after South Africa emerged from the isolation of apartheid and a warrior who battled his illness with the same motivation and drive as he did any opponent who bowled or stood at the crease to face him. 

The statistics on his performance speak for themselves and depict a man who achieved much in his chosen sport. He took 930 wickets in first class matches (482 in SA and for Nottinghamshire), scored 137 First Class 50s and 48 First Class centuries.

Rice made major contributions to both cricketing and motorsports on a local and international level. 

May the lessons of his perseverance live on in our country’s future sportsmen and women. Rest in Peace, Captain Rice.
