Potchefstroom - The Dolphins took charge of second place on the One-Day Cup table as they beat the Highveld Lions by three wickets in a rain-affected match at Senwes Park on Friday.
While Robbie Frylinck was the standout performer in statistical terms, taking 4 for 30 in 9.3 overs as the Lions were bowled out for 214, Khaya Zondo had the biggest impact.
Zondo effected the run-out of Temba Bavuma (80), which changed the course of the Lions innings as they ultimately fell from 147 for three in the 33rd over to be bowled out in the 46th.
He then scored an unbeaten 70 to see the Dolphins home after they had slid to 95 for four chasing a target of 217 in 47 overs.
A brief rain shower after 14 overs of the game reduced the match by three overs per side.
It arrived with the Lions on 74 for one, with Alviro Petersen (47) and Bavuma in the midst of a 99-run stand for the second wicket.
Daryn Smit (2 for 16 from five overs) pulled things back for the Dolphins when he dismissed both Petersen and Neil McKenzie, and then two overs later Zondo produced his piece of brilliant fielding to get rid of the well-set Bavuma.
Frylinck took it from there as he bustled through the middle and lower order, with a bit of help from Daryn Dupavillon (2 for 33), who made his first appearance for the Dolphins this season.
The innings was all over in 45.3 overs, but the target was adjusted marginally upwards due to the rain delay.
Although Morne van Wyk (42) and Cameron Delport (41) provided a solid start, a mid-innings collapse and some sharp bowling by Dwaine Pretorius (4 for 36) meant that Zondo had much to do.
He proved up to the task as he took the Dolphins home with 17 deliveries to spare to walk away with the man-of-the-match award.
