According to ESPNcricinfo, the call was made on Sunday before the team departed for their first T20 international against Bangladesh.
According to the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s security consultant, Hossain Imam, Parnell was abused and threatened by an anonymous caller.
Imam said the intelligence agencies were informed and they have tried to trace the caller.
Proteas team manager, Mohammed Moosajee, said they thought it was a prank call but was concerned that the hotel had allowed an anonymous caller to get through to Parnell.
“He (Wayne) didn't feel threatened at all, he was more concerned about anonymous phone calls being put through to his room," said Moosajee.
Imam said the call was not made from a mobile phone, and hotel authorities should have asked for the player's permission first before transferring the call to his room.
Parnell shrugged off the incident well, taking 1/12 in 2.1 overs as the Proteas romped to a 52 run victory at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.
The second and final T20 is scheduled for Tuesday (09:00 SA time).
