Van Wyk in Proteas' T20 plans

Cape Town - Even he if doesn't play for the Proteas in their T20 clash against India on Friday, Morné van Wyk is a strong candidate for the World T20 Championships later this year.

The fact that he can be utilised as an opening batsman and a wicketkeeper, counts in his favour.

And that was also the message he received from South Africa's selector chief, Andrew Hudson.

"It's always nice getting a phone call like that.

"I didn't have any expectations after I was not invited along with the larger group (to Arabella) at the beginning of the season," Van Wyk told Volksblad.

Meanwhile, Jacques Kallis's participation in his benefit game against India will determine who will keep wicket for South Africa at the Wanderers of Friday.

Kallis withdrew from South Africa's final Test against New Zealand in Wellington due to a stiff neck and if he's still uncomfortable when they arrive back later this week, Van Wyk should play against India.

But should Kallis be fit, newcomer from the Cobras, Dane Vilas, could make his international debut.

Van Wyk is nevertheless confident in his chances of representing South Africa in the world T20 event in Sri Lanka later this year. In his last T20 game for the Proteas he smacked a national record 50 off 24 balls against the Indians in Makhaya Ntini's farewell match last year. He was then dropped for South Africa's first T20 match this season against Australia.

But he's had a good season in domestic T20 cricket for the Knights. His 423 run-tally is the second highest in the competition.
