Dolphins dominant in Durban

Durban - A 128-run stand between the Van Wyk brothers was backed up by the Dolphins bowlers as they established a dominant position on day two of their Sunfoil Series clash with the Knights at Kingsmead.

While Divan van Wyk turned his overnight 109 not out into 171, older brother Morne scored an unbeaten 103 as the Dolphins posted 455 for five declared.

Daryn Dupavillon, Mathew Pillans and Keshav Maharaj all grabbed a wicket thereafter as the Knights were reduced to 72 for three before bad light stopped play with 18 overs still scheduled to be bowled.

The framework for day two’s positive play from the Dolphins had been set up on day one, when Divan van Wyk and Daryn Smit had shown extreme patience to see the hosts to stumps on 240 for three.

Although Shadley van Schalkwyk removed Smit for 67 in the ninth over of the second day, the platform was set for Morne van Wyk to move the game along.

He was particularly positive after the lunch break, scoring 44 off 48 balls even as his brother fell to Van Schalkwyk (3 for 79) after a marathon nine-and-a-half-hour knock.

Van Wyk senior declared upon reaching his 18th first-class century off 129 balls, leaving Andile Phehlukwayo unbeaten on 42 from just 35 deliveries.

The Knights got off to a swift start in their reply, reaching 36 without loss in the sixth over before Pillans stemmed the flow by having Gihahn Cloete caught behind.

Dupavillon dismissed Tumelo Bodibe for a duck three overs later, and shortly before the light deteriorated Rudi Second was trapped lbw by Maharaj.

Reeza Hendricks will resume on 34 not out when he returns to the crease with Pite van Biljon on the third morning.
