Dolphins drive home advantage

Durban - Matthew Pillans and and Daryn Dupavillon shared nine wickets to make up some of the time lost to the elements at Kingsmead and keep the Dolphins in with a shout of victory over the Knights in the Sunfoil Series.

Pillans led the way with figures of 6 for 67 while Dupavillon took 3 for 56, as the young seam duo ripped out the last six Knights wickets in less than 10 overs for the addition of just 21 runs.

The Knights were bowled out for 237 to concede a 218-run lead on the first innings, so the Dolphins will have the option of asking them to follow on at the start of the final day.

That outcome looked unlikely when rain caused a significant delay at the start of day three and then Pite van Biljon and Obus Pienaar put on 136 for the fifth wicket.

The Knights had lost Rudi Second lbw to Keshav Maharaj after resuming on 72 for three, but looked to have moved to a position of safety when Van Biljon (79) and Pienaar (63) carried them to 216 for four.

Yet within a single bowling spell they had been rolled over, with Pillans making the initial breakthrough when he had Pienaar caught at backward square leg, then getting rid of Van Biljon, Shadley van Schalkwyk and Duanne Olivier in the space of seven deliveries.

In between Dupavillon had Werner Coetsee caught behind by wicketkeeper Morne van Wyk and Malusi Siboto pouched at second slip as the Knights disintegrated in the space of 45 minutes.

Olivier’s dismissal brought the innings to a close and also signalled stumps, which will give Van Wyk some time to assess his bowlers and the situation before deciding whether to enforce the follow-on.
