Titans batsmen up against it

Johannesburg - Farhaan Behardien and Mangaliso Mosehle, with a sixth-wicket partnership of 56, enabled the Titans to reach 158 for five at stumps on day two of their domestic four-day match against the Highveld Lions the Wanderers on Friday.

The Titans' first spell at the crease was shaky from the outset. Chasing down 401, they were still trailing by 243 runs at the close of play and needing 94 runs to avoid the follow-on.

When the umpires called time because of bad light, Behardien was unbeaten on 45 and Mosehle on 35.

The visitors courted disaster as early as the second over, losing Dean Elgar (4).

Heino Kuhn (0) and Qaasim Adams (8) were dismissed soon after, and the Titans had lost three for 33 within 12 overs.

Behardien and Roelof van der Merwe then knuckled down to put on 55 for the fifth wicket.

Earlier, the Highveld Lions started the second day on 271 for five, with Thami Tsolekile on 19 and Devon Conway on seven.

Tsolekile added a further 12 runs before holing out to Ethy Mbhalati at fine leg.

Tsolekile's dismissal brought Chris Morris to the crease and together with Conway they mustered 35 runs for the seventh wicket.

Morris and Conway departed within three runs of each other, leaving Hardus Viljoen and Kagiso Rabada to rebuild the innings.

It was slow going, with Rabada facing 29 balls before scoring a single after 40 minutes.

Right on the stroke of the lunch break, Viljoen was caught in the slips by Dean Elgar for 23.

Rabada was the last man standing on 48 not out, enabling the hosts to post a competitive 401 in the first innings.

Meanwhile, in Bloemfontein, Rudi Second (92 not out) steered the match in favour of the Knights on day two of their match against the Warriors.

At the close of play, the Knights were 286 for eight with a lead of 289 in the second innings.

Second marched to the middle with the score on 68 for two, and attempting to avoid his second duck of the match. But while wickets tumbled around him as the Knights fell to 157 for seven, Second held his nerve until he was joined by Corne Dry (40) as the pair put on 69 for the eighth wicket. Dry was removed by spinner Simon Harmer in the 68th over of the innings, leaving the Warriors on 226 for eight.

Quinton Friend (30 not out) then joined Second at the wicket, and the pair put together another handy lower-order partnership of 60, unbeaten at stumps.

Earlier in the day, the Warriors added one to their overnight total as they were bowled out for 137 which gave the Knights a three-run lead as the first innings came to a close.
