Johannesburg - The 2015 Joburg Open teed off at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club on Thursday with the Executive Mayor of the City of Joburg, Councillor Mpho Parks Tau, hitting the ceremonial first tee shot.
With the Joburg Open trophy standing alongside the Open Championship’s Claret Jug, the Executive Mayor reiterated the city’s commitment to a tournament that has been secured for a further three years on the European and Sunshine Tour schedules.
“This event gives us an opportunity to position Johannesburg as a golf destination of choice. Johannesburg is the flagship city of Africa, and since it made its debut in 2007, the Joburg Open has fast risen in status to become one of the major tournaments on the international schedule of the European Tour.”
The news that the tournament has been secured until 2018 has been welcomed by the players.
“This is one of the more prestigious tournaments we have in South Africa with one of the biggest prize funds on the Sunshine Tour. I think it’s a unique event in a great city and one that is supported pretty well from a spectator point of view. It’s a tournament I always enjoy playing,” said Thomas Aiken.
The Joburg Open will be played from today, Thursday to Sunday.
Local residents and sporting fans, who are visiting Johannesburg at the time, are encouraged to attend the Joburg Open 2015 at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington golf clubs. The entrance fee is R50 a day or R200 for the entire tournament. Pensioners and children under the age of 16 get free entry. Tickets can be purchased online at TicketPro www.ticketpros.co.za
The event will be broadcast live on SuperSport from the 26 February to 1 March 2015.
