ASA keep liquidators at bay

Johannesburg - Athletics South Africa (ASA) were spared from auctioning off their office supplies in order to pay off pole-vaulter Jan Blignaut on Wednesday.

The City Press reports that despite having the sheriff arrive at the ASA offices to collect the goods, the auction was cancelled as an agreement was met between Blignaut's lawyers, ASA and the sheriff.

Blignaut initially sued ASA for R3 million, which subsequently shot up to R10.4 million, for the head injuries he sustained while competing at an ASA-sanctioned track and field event in 2009.

ASA were unable to cough up the sum, despite the court ruling in Blignaut's favour, resulting in the former submitting an application for the liquidation of ASA.

However, according to ASA president Aleck Skhosana, the organisation paid a meagre amount to Blignaut's lawyers to keep the liquidators at bay.

It is understood that the value of the goods was priced at around R100 000.

ASA have been dodging possible liquidation for the better part of four months, battling the repercussions  of Blignaut's successful lawsuit.
