Comrades Marathon GM quits

Durban - The Comrades Marathon general manager, Chris Bruwer, will be moving on after only one year at the helm of the race, and seven months before the 90th running of the ultra-marathon.

"Moving up from Cape Town and leaving my family behind proved much harder than I anticipated and I have asked the CMA Board to kindly consider my resignation," said Bruwer, who will be leaving at the end of October and is said to be continuing in sponsorship and sports event marketing.

"I would also like to extend my gratitude to the board, staff and race organising committee and wish them all the best for the upcoming 90th edition next year," said Bruwer, who will follow the previous manager Gary Boshoff down to Western Cape.

Bruwer took over from Boshoff in late 2013.

It means the race will have experienced three changes to race management in the past 12 months with race director Rowyn James replacing Johan van Staden in March this year.

"We would like to thank Chris for his contribution to the CMA," said CMA chairman Mac Chitja.

No mention has yet been made of Bruwer's successor.
