Oldest TDF stage winner dies

Brussels - Pino Cerami, the oldest stage winner in the Tour de France since World War II, has died aged 92 after a long illness, his family revealed on Saturday.

Cerami - born in Italy but who emigrated to Belgium and attained Belgian nationality in 1956 - won the ninth stage of the 1963 Tour de France at the age of 41 years and three months although he failed to finish the race itself.

His most successful campaign came in 1960 when he won the one day classics Paris-Roubaix and the Fleche-Wallonne and the rider, who was affectionately known as 'Pino', finished third in the world championship road race.

A race named in his honour the Grand Prix Pino Cerami has been a feature of the Belgian cycling calendar since 1964.

According to his family, cited by Belgian media group Sudpresse, Cerami had been admitted to a nursing home in Charleroi several days ago.
