Boxing's Stanley Sono dies

Johannesburg - Stanley Sono, for many years one of the leading figures in SA boxing, has died.

Known as a man who did everything in amateur and professional boxing, except getting into the ring and throwing punches, Sono, 78, was a trainer, referee, judge, time keeper and board member in both the amateur and professional codes.

He died at his home in Dobsonville near Johannesburg after a long illness.

Sono spent years training amateurs when he was a young man.

He received Springbok colours as a trainer in 1978 and held various positions in the SA Boxing Federation and SA Amateur Boxing Association.

He was as an official in all capacities in professional boxing and was involved with administration for many years. At one time he served as chairperson of the Transvaal Boxing Board of Control.

Sono received a merit award for administration from the SA Schools Union and in 2009 received the Kamanga award from the president for his services to boxing.
