Cheetahs lock calls it a day

Cape Town - Free State Cheetahs lock Waltie Vermeulen has decided to retire from rugby due to a succession of injuries, Volksblad reports.

The 26-year-old will now focus on his career as a medical doctor in Hopetown.

Cheetahs CEO Harold Verster said it's a big blow for the union but they have made plans to cover for the void left by Vermeulen.

"There are a number of young players, like Henco Venter, who have come to the fore," said Verster.

Vermeulen played 44 Currie Cup and 23 Super Rugby games for the Cheetahs.
