Hougaard eager to prove selectors wrong

Cape Town - Francois Hougaard is eager to prove the Springbok selectors wrong after he was excluded from the Springbok squad.

Hougaard has admitted that he was surprised being left out of Heyneke Meyer’s Bok squad, but has vowed to prove his worth for the Blue Bulls in this year’s Currie Cup.

Instead of leaving after the Super Rugby competition, Hougaard has opted to play Currie Cup rugby before heading to Japan to play for the Canon Eagles.

“I could have earned more money in Japan, but I’m not someone who runs away. I’m a fighter and like to prove people wrong,” he told Netwerk24.

Hougaard played at wing for most parts of the Bulls’ Super Rugby campaign, but said Blue Bulls coach Nollis Marais will play him at scrumhalf in the Currie Cup.

“I’m not sure if it (playing wing) influenced my chance of making the Bok squad. But I’m not going to let it get me down. I enjoy playing wing. If I don’t make the World Cup squad, then so be it. But I will fight until the end to make it.

“I had a nice chat with Nollis and he wants to utilise me at scrumhalf. It’s the position where you get criticised most often. If the forwards struggle, then the scrumhalf struggles. I’m ready for the responsibility.”
