Kiwi Brett joins Lyon ranks

Lyon - New Zealand flyhalf Stephen Brett will join second division leaders Lyon on a two year deal from Bayonne next season.

The 28-year-old, who has been capped by the All Blacks at Under-21 level, signed with Bayonne one year ago and has made 20 Top 14 appearances, kicking 15 penalties and a conversion.

With Lyon 14 points clear at the top of the second division he is almost certain to be plying his trade in the Top 14 next season.

Brett was embroiled in a scandal earlier this season after turning up to a video training session in October under the influence of alcohol.

Wales scrumhalf Mike Phillips was sacked for his role in the same incident - it wasn't his first off-field indiscretion at Bayonne - while Brett and compatriot Dwayne Haare were hit with heavy fines.

Brett began his career with New Zealand side Crusaders before a two-year stint with the Blues, followed by another two year spell with Japanese outfit Toyota Verblitz.

Bayonne are hovering just above the relegation zone with the same number of points as second-from-bottom Oyonnax, but ahead on a better head-to-head record with two games left.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
