Steyn released from Bok squad after brother's death

Cape Town - Centre Frans Steyn has been released from the Springbok squad following the death of his brother.

Steyn's brother Wimpie committed suicide on the family farm in the Bethlehem area on Monday morning, according to reports.

Frans Steyn, although part of the current Springboks squad assembled in Durban for Saturday's Rugby Championship clash against Argentina, wasn't scheduled to play any part in the match due to a chest injury.

"Frans informed me straight after our morning session on Monday and as soon as he heard the sad and tragic news that his brother had passed away," said Ian Schwartz, Springbok Team Manager.

"We will not take any decisions on his immediate involvement with the squad – his personal situation is now the most important and we will support him and his family wherever we can in this very difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Frans and his entire family in this time of mourning."

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
