Jantjies 'bad fit in the Cape'

Cape Town - Former All Black flyhalf Carlos Spencer says Elton Jantjies will be a better player if he leaves the Stormers.

Spencer was speaking to Die Burger here on Thursday where he is preparing for a boxing bout on Friday night against Soldier Mwosu.

Jantjies has struggled since joining the Stormers on-loan from the Lions for this year's Super Rugby competition, but Spencer believes the Springbok doesn't fit into the Cape side's style of play.

"Elton is a flair-player who plays with confidence. He's an exciting young player, but the Stormers' game-plan doesn't suit him," said Spencer.

"The Stormers focus on defence and not attack. Elton wants to express himself and you have to give someone like that freedom to take charge.

"I would definitely say the Stormers aren't the right team for him."

Spencer also feels the Stormers were wrong to relieve Jantjies of the goal-kicking duties after he struggled in their first Super Rugby game against the Bulls.

He's a good place-kicker and likes to kick. What message does it send to a young player if you don't trust him or think he is good enough? Elton thrives on confidence."

Spencer also said the Stormers should have adapted their play if they wanted a player like Jantjies to succeed.

"Elton likes to attack the gain line and if he's not allowed to do that, and doesn't get players that run into space next to him, then he'll struggle.

"The Stormers do have quality outside backs, but don't know how to use them."

Jantjies is likely to head back to the Lions after the completion of the Super Rugby competition, with the Stormers unlikely to offer him a permanent deal.

And while his play has improved over the last two weeks, his attacking game may have to be put on hold on Saturday when the Stormers host the Kings.

A massive cold front is set to hit Cape Town on the weekend, with 100% chance of heavy rain predicted, which means a tactical game will be at the order of the day.

The clash at Newlands kicks off at 17:05.
