WP boss demands Currie Cup win

Cape Town - Western Province Rugby Union president Thelo Wakefield says winning the 2014 Currie Cup is "non-negotiable" for the Capetonians.

Wakefield was left upset after the Stormers finished the Super Rugby season in a lowly 11th position - their worst effort since finishing 10th in 2009.

Wakefield, in an interview with the Cape Times, said Allister Coetzee's position of senior professional coach is currently being evaluated by Director of Rugby Gert Smal and that a decision on whether Coetzee will again take charge of the WP Currie Cup team is yet to be made.

It was reported earlier this year that Vodacom Cup coach John Dobson would take over the Currie Cup duties.

Wakefield said they will do everything necessary to prevent a repeat of what happened in Super Rugby this year, starting with the upcoming Currie Cup.

He said the coaches must understand that winning the Currie Cup this year is "non-negotiable" and that a repeat of what happened in Super Rugby this year "will not be accepted".

Wakefield acknowledged that injuries played a big role in hampering the Stormers' season, but said there will be no excuses next season as the union aims to improve its attendance figures.

WP start their Currie Cup campaign against the Eastern Province Kings in Port Elizabeth on August 8.

WP lost the Currie Cup final 33-19 at home to the Sharks last year.
