Back to basics for Bafana

Cape Town - Following Bafana Bafana’s AFCON exit, coach Shakes Mashaba believes South Africa must go back to the “basics of playing football”.

As it happened: Ghana 2 - 1 South Africa

According to KickOff, a disappointed Mashaba admits that Bafana did their best to brush aside Ghana but lost yet again after taking the lead in the first half.

“In the second half, in the first 10 minutes we started to sit back. We tried to push them out, made changes, but it didn't work out,” said Mashaba.

"We need to go back to our basics of playing football, when to do things, how to do them, and where to do them."

Throughout the tournament Bafana lacked the ability to hold onto a lead for the full 90 minutes and Mashaba rues their chances to “kill off a game”.

"We need that ability to kill off a game, that is one of the things I am talking about when we say the basics.

"We needed to take our time, but we were knocking it back to them and that's where the problem was coming from."

Where do you think Shakes Mashaba went wrong in the 2015 AFCON tournament?
