Cape Town - Matthew Booth believes Neil Tovey will start his job on the back foot after he was appointed as SAFA’s Technical Director in controversial circumstances.
Tovey’s appointment was slammed by the South African Football Coaches Association (SAFCA) who believed that they ought to have been consulted in the decision-making process.
Booth acknowledges the fact that the controversy has made Tovey’s job all the more difficult, but did not want to be drawn into whether or not SAFA followed the correct procedure in appointing the former AFCON-winning captain.
“Please make this clear: I am not too sure on the protocol that was supposed to be followed but perhaps they did not follow the right protocol,” Booth told Sport24.
“If so, it puts him on the back foot and creates some animosity between the two (Tovey and SAFCA) but I still feel that it is a good appointment merely from the point of view that he’s been around the block.
“He has had success at club level, he knows the developmental systems inside-out and he has had success as a player and that commands instant respect. unlike having just another political appointment.”
