Masinga wants under-23s in CHAN side

Cape Town - Bafana Bafana legend, Phil Masinga, has called on Shakes Mashaba, to utilise young players in the African Nations Championship following in the team’s 3-0 win over Mauritius on Saturday.

The retired striker said it was good that the team started on a good note against the Islanders, but told Sport24 he felt that Mashaba should have taken the u-23 to play the tournament and should not have included senior players like Itumeleng Khune.

“Look, I’m not even criticising the coach or anything like that, but if you looked at the Mauritius line-up, they had players as young as 19 and 20 and I think we should do the same with competitions like this one,” Masinga said.

“From what I understand, the aim of this competition is to give young players the platform to grow and we should do like other countries.”

Nonetheless, the 1996 African Nations Cup winner said he was happy with the win over Mauritius and is looking for more improvement going forward.
